The Town of Serenity
((It's based somewhat off Julian, California))
Serenity was founded following the Civil War, when displaced Confederate Veterans from Georgia headed West to seek their fortunes in a new, mostly unsettled land. They found a lush meadow between Volcan Mountain and the Cuyamacas to their liking. The pioneers stayed and began farming the rich land. While many crops were planted and animals pastured, Serenity proved to be a fine place to grow apples.
Apples continue to be produced in Serenity. Their sweet, fresh flavor lures thousands to the mountains each fall, when visitors will find fruit stands overflowing with crisp fruit, homemade cider and other delicacies.
Local shops feature handtooled jewelry, Western artwork, souvenirs, and apple-related foods and candy. A number of wineries located in and around Serenity offer complimentary wine tasting. The historic town site of Serenity has approximately 300 full- and part-time residents, who act as a close-knit community often taking care of each other.
At 4,235 feet, Serenity’s high elevation provides clean air, blue skies and four distinct seasons. Spring is generally mild and wildflowers decorate the backcountry in and around Serenity while a profusion of daffodils is evident throughout the town site.
Average summer temperatures fall in the 80s with occasional summer rains in July and August. The first cold spell of fall prompts a blanket of color as the trees prepare for a winter of gentle snowfalls. Sledding and snowball fun in the surrounding mountains add to the season’s activities.
